Best enclosures for ball pythons (4×2×2 for adults)
ReptiFiles calls the old “ball pythons prefer tiny tubs” advice outdated and not based on science. For adults over 3 ft, the minimum is 48″×24″×24″. Front-opening PVC with a mesh top is the type ReptiFiles recommends, because it holds humidity.
Quick comparison
| Option | Spec | Pros | Cons | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zen Habitats 4′×2′×2′ PVC | 48×24×24″ (~120 gal equiv., Zen FAQ) | On ReptiFiles' recommended list; PVC handles 0–100% humidity and under-tank heat (Zen FAQ); stackable | Assembly required; Zen's wood panels are only rated for 0–50% humidity, which is wrong for ball pythons | Meets adult min |
| Zen Habitats 4′×2′×4′ PVC | 48×24×48″ | ReptiFiles recommends extra height, especially for males | More space to furnish and heat | Best for climbing |
| Dubia.com 4×2×2 (120 gal) | 48×24×24″ | On ReptiFiles' recommended list | Mostly sold direct, so Amazon stock varies | Meets adult min |
| Kages / Toad Ranch (Royal Lounge, 6×3×3) | 4′–6′ long | Room for large females; ReptiFiles recommends Kages only with the “2 square screens” option | Expensive; specialty shipping | Large adults |
| Glass 40-gal / tubs | ~36″ or less | Fine for hatchlings and juveniles | Below the adult minimum; glass struggles to hold the 60–80% humidity ReptiFiles recommends | Not for adults |
Zen Habitats 4×2×2 PVC enclosure
ReptiFiles recommends it for ball pythons, and Zen's ReptiFiles care sheet starts its shopping list with a 4×2×2 or 4×2×4 PVC enclosure. Buy PVC, not wood, for a humid species.
Zen Habitats 4×2×4 PVC enclosure
The same floor with 48″ of height. ReptiFiles suggests at least 2 ft of vertical climbing space, and more is better, especially for males.

When comparing listings, check interior dimensions, a front opening, a mesh top section for lamps, and secure locks.
Setup notes from ReptiFiles
- House one python per enclosure. ReptiFiles says cohousing causes competition for food, heat, and hides.
- Lay 4–6″ of moisture-retentive substrate (ReptiFiles care sheet).
- Juveniles can go straight into an adult enclosure if there's plenty of cover.
- Pair the enclosure with overhead heat. See our ball python heat guide.
